Every so often I notice stepping stones that were place with not much thought to how they are meant to be used. The pavers are either placed too close together so that heels can get stuck in them, they are placed too far apart so that one must lunge between the stones, or not quite far enough apart to be comfortable to walk on. The good news is, that although not much thought is given to a lot of stepping stone placement thus creating awkward and frustrating pathways, it doesn’t have to be that way.
There is very little mystery as to how far apart stepping stones should be placed in order to function well and look good. Simply place your stepping stones 24″ on center. That’s it. The average relaxed adult human stride length is about 24″, so by placing your stepping stones at that distance apart they will provide you with a comfortably functional pathway. If you want to design your path specifically to your stride for an even more custom and comfortable experience simply mark off your stride, measure it, and lay your step stones to that distance on center.
Happy pathways everyone!
