Rooted Perspective

Kenzie’s approach to landscape design is rooted in understanding place and creating thoughtful, lasting landscapes that serve both people and the environment. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, she moved west to study Landscape Architecture at Montana State University, where the mountains and communities surrounding Bozeman became an extension of the classroom. Her education in Montana gave her firsthand experience with the realities of designing in the Mountain West, where climate, water, ecology, and long term maintenance all influence how a landscape takes shape.

Her education expanded beyond Montana while living and studying in Melbourne, Australia. Immersion in a culturally diverse city, paired with opportunities to explore landscapes across the country, introduced her to different relationships between people, nature, culture, and public space. Experiencing places so different from those she knew back home broadened her understanding of sustainability and the importance of designing in response to local climate, resources, ecology, and community. She returned to Montana with a wider design perspective and a greater appreciation for creating landscapes that are both environmentally responsible and rooted in what makes a place unique.

At inContour, Kenzie puts that perspective into practice on residential and public projects. Working from early concepts through construction documentation has strengthened her understanding of how planting, irrigation, materials, and site design come together to create landscapes that are beautiful, resource efficient, practical to maintain, and built for the long term. She continues to build on that knowledge with every project, bringing curiosity and resourcefulness to inContour’s sustainable approach to design.

Away from the office, Kenzie spends much of her time in the places that first drew her west. Whether trail running, backcountry skiing, or hitting the trail with her pup, time outdoors keeps her engaged with the landscape and brings a firsthand perspective back to her work.
